Are You Airing Out your baby?
Are You Airing Out Your Baby?
In the 1920's to 1930's, airing out your baby was very popular. Getting the proper amount of air was paramount to cleanse the blood, build an immunity to certain illnesses as well as an adaptation to cold. This belief was in all the parenting magazines in the early 20th century.
Dr. Luther Emmett Holt wrote a book called, "Care and Feeding of Children", in which he coined the term "airing". Dr. Holt explained that the child should be dressed with a bonnet and a light jacket, put in a crib and placed in a room with all the windows open and the doors shut. Dr. Holt believed that fresh air is wss important as food with regards to health and growth. It was believed that this practice would toughen babies.
Now, there are no reports that Dr. Holt actually condoned putting a baby in a cage and sitting the child condone but that's exactly what happened. RISE OF THE BABY CAGES! Parents started putting their children out. In the cold? with very little clothing? Whoa! Emma Read patented the portable baby cage in 1922. Most would be quick to denounce Mrs. Read but what about Eleanor Roosevelt? Allegedly, she (Roosevelt) purchased a chicken cage to put her daughter, Ana , in while the child was napping.
This is all very BIZARRE, almost unbelievable but there weren't many child protection laws then. Soon, apartments could be rented with these cages already attached to windows. CRAZY! But, this may explain why some (Caucasians) can be seen, in the dead of winter, wearing shorts and no coats LOL
Let the babies be babies. They are delicate human beings. I'm almost positive if they could talk, they would say, "You get in the cage Mommy"!
